OLD Malton St Mary’s last hope of silverware this season ended in shoot-out woe as they were knocked out of the York Minster Engineering League Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage.

Saints - who at one point were eyeing a trophy quadruple but lost in the finals of the North Riding FA Saturday County Cup and York FA Saturday Senior Cup and finished runners-up in the premier division - will end term empty-handed after losing 4-3 on penalties to Huntington Rovers in their last remaining competition on Monday night.

The tie itself had finished 2-2.

Saints’ Ryedale neighbours, Brooklyn and Malton & Norton, could not upset the odds in their quarter-finals this week, either.

Brooklyn, promoted to the premier division, got a warning of what to expect in the top tier as they lost 5-0 to a Dunnington side who are seeking a double after beating St Mary’s in the York FA Senior Cup final.

Malton & Norton, who finished one place below Brooklyn in division one, lost 3-0 in a hard-fought tie against new premier division champions Riccall United.

John Heads, Grant Bulmer, Matthew Wain, Jimmy Willmoth and Oliver Newby got the Dunnington goals, Wayne Brook (2) and Gary Collier likewise for Riccall.

St Mary’s had reached the quarter-final stage with a 4-0 win at Church Fenton White Horse last midweek, courtesy of goals by man-of-the-match Danny Fogg, Damon Cox, Tom Hoggard and substitute Darren Dunning, the player-boss.

The semi-finals, which see Dringhouses meet Huntington and Riccall face Dunnington, take place tomorrow night.

Stamford Bridge were knocked out of the League Junior Cup on Monday night as they lost 6-5 on penalties at Thorpe United after the tie had finished 3-3.

They had won through their previous round last Wednesday as man-of-the-match Nathan Spreckley scored twice and John Cavanagh once in a 3-2 win over Rawcliffe.

Also last midweek, division three champions Kirkbymoorside rounded off their successful campaign with an 8-2 trouncing of Selby Olympia.

The plunder was shared between Rob Hague, Bradley Magson, Connor Campbell, Lee Alexander (2), regular scorer Alex Strickland and Jordan Thackeray.

Malton & Norton reserves were another Ryedale side to have no knockout luck last midweek as they lost 3-1 on penalties to Dunnington reserves in the Reserve Cup.

The game had ended 2-2, with Steven Hoggard and Adam Cook on target for M&N.

Brooklyn reserves progressed, though, with a 1-0 win over Dringhouses reserves.
