PICKERING Town goal machine Liam Salt proved to be an unwitting hero turned villain for Brooklyn in the Scarborough & District FA District Cup - while playing in goal for Edgehill.

Salt, who is out of the frame at Pickering as he comes back from injury, donned the gloves for his Scarborough & District League club on Saturday and, while his mistake handed Brooklyn a late equaliser, he ended up pulling off the decisive save in a penalty shoot-out to send Edgehill into the quarter-finals.

Both sides went into the tie on form and, while Edgehill - who have a 100 per cent record at the top of the Scarborough league - were the favourites, they were well-matched by their York Minster Engineering League division one opponents.

Ricky Greening fired Edgehill into the lead a minute before half-time, hitting a thunderous effort into the stanchion from 25 yards out, and his side missed a couple of further chances in the second half.

Brooklyn, for their part, had a goal by Mikey Brown ruled out for offside before they bagged their leveller two minutes from time.

A hopeful ball over the top form Mikey Linsley was missed by onrushing goalkeeper Salt, allowing Brown to tap into the vacant net

In the shoot-out, Salty made amends when superbly saving Brooklyn's first spot kick taken by Andrew Metcalfe.

Brooklyn went on to score their other four penalties, through Marcus Godsell, Linsley, Max Fraser who had been exceptional in defence - and Brown, but Edgehill knocked in all five through Greening, man-of-the-match Danny White, Dean Craig, Carl Hepples and Aaran Jenking.

Ryedale Sports Club also suffered cup agony, being the victims of the shock of the round, losing 4-2 to Scarborough & District League third division outfit Tennyson.

Sam Mahoney, with a penalty, and Neil Forsyth put Tennyson two up before first division strugglers Ryedale hit back through Martin Foxton after good work by Jack Hall.

Five minutes into the second half, Mahoney scored his second goal but Ryedale again got hope when awarded a controversial penalty converted by Foxton.

Nevertheless, Clayton Walker restored Tennyson's two-goal lead and, although the last 10 minutes saw Ryedale in all out attack mode, the third division side, for whom Neil Forsyth starred in centre midfield, defended superbly to gain a place in the last eight.

Leo Hutchinson was Ryedale's man of the match.

Kirkbymoorside, unbeaten in the Minster League third division, became the only Ryedale side to reach the quarter-finals, and they did it in style with a 7-0 home win against United Sports Bar.

Veteran Alex Strickland, the man of the match, scored a hat-trick, with Bradley Magson, Chris Hodgson, Jordan Rivis and Jason Brown also netting for a Kirkby side who were without the services of manager Paul Richardson for the weekend.

USB were reduced to 10 men in the second half when former Pickering Town player George Rose was sent off by referee Kevin Crick.

Sinnington, from the newitts.com Beckett League, were unable to join them as they lost 3-0 to Scarborough League champions Newlands Park.

Drew McCoubrey (2) and Adam Stride sent Park through, but the Sinners, with Will Sanders the man of the match, put on a really good show, with two of the goals only coming late on.

Elsewhere, Filey Town thrashed Hunmanby United 11-0 with former Hunmanby player Cameron Dobson scoring seven goals.

West Pier beat Scalby 6-0 thanks to goals by Ali Caw (2), Chris Nelson(2), Gaz Thomas and Neil Thomas, Whitby Fishermen saw off Ayton reserves 7-3, and Seamer Sports beat Ayton 5-3 on penalties after the tie had ended 1-1.

Quarter-final draw: Filey Town v Whitby Fishermen, Edgehill v Kirkbymoorside, Tennyson v West Pier, Seamer Sports v Newlands Park. Ties to be played on Saturday, December 20.
