RILLINGTON Athletic have resigned from the Scarborough & District League just before the start of the season.

The club decided at their annual general meeting to have only one team so resigned their second string from the Beckett League second division, keeping a team in the Scarborough League. However, just days before the start the club withdrew from this league too, due to a lack of players. They had been relegated to the third division last season.

Hopefully a team will be put together for 2015-16.

In the first division on Saturday, Ryedale Sports Club were hit by a sucker punch in a 3-2 defeat at home to Whitby Fishermen.

Jack Hall put Ryedale ahead at half-time but, after the break, the Fishermen took a 2-1 lead through Sam Bailey and Steve Ross.

Adam Hornby levelled but two minutes from time the Fishermen grabbed a winner through an Ian Smith header from a corner by ex-Pickering Town player Steve Swales.

Harry Reed, playing at centre-back, was Ryedale’s man of the match.

Last season’s first division champions, Newlands Park, beat Ayton 8-1 through Jack Hakings (2), Adam Stride (2), Tom Jenkinson, Chris Dove, Danny Jenkinson and Aidan Thomas.

Filey Town thrashed Hunmanby United 9-0 with James Pinder leading the way with four goals, including all three goals in the first half.

Edgehill beat United Sports Bar 6-2 with new signing Jackson Jowett scoring his first hat-trick for the club.

West Pier twice came from behind to beat Seamer Sports 4-2. Tommy Baker, Luke Delve (2) and Sam Garnett were the Pier marksmen.

Westover Wasps beat Sleights 6-1, Jordan Shaw hitting a hat-trick.

In division two, Scalby, looking for a better season, beat Snainton 6-1 through Jake Scutt, Darren Arnott and Will Bray (2) in the first half and substitute George Wilson (2) on the second. Snainton got a late goal through Martin Karetynk.

Cayton beat Filey Town reserves 3-1 with goals by Curtis Foreman and Josh Venner (2).
