BROOKLYN Under-16s won the Scarborough & District FA U16s Senior Minor Cup for the second year running after a 2-1 victory over Fishburn Park in a pulsating high-tempo final.

Brooklyn went two up but roles were reversed in the second half at Whitby Town’s stadium as Park, who have lost only once in their Scarborough & District U16s League campaign, threw everything at the Ryedale side, who held on superbly.

Brooklyn, of the York Minor League, started brightly with a high-tempo pressing game and the pressure paid off on 22 minutes when keeper Nick Lock's goal-kick was flicked on by James Barrett, with Arron Dews finishing with a clinical right-foot drive.

The lead was soon doubled as Lewis Botham left his marker and hit a strong low shot, which was parried by the keeper into the path of Barrett, who finished at the far post.

Fishburn went close to striking back through Tom Shrimpton and Billy Graham and, after pushed forward more after the interval, they did soon halve the deficit as Brad Lewis finished a fine move.

Brooklyn's defence, with Lock excellent behind them, then held firm against a sustained period of pressure, with Nathan Cross, Matthew Simpson and Josh Singleton standing their ground.

Ryan Gaughan kept the lead intact with a brilliant overhead

goal-line clearance, as Fishburn continued to attack from all areas.

Substitute Matthew Watson missed three great chances to increase the lead, as Brooklyn relied on playing on the break. Fishburn keeper Dan Jinks also saved superbly to deny Nathan Stannard and Dews late on.

But, with Liam Wheeler, Stannard, Marcus Brigham and Shaun Harland all playing their hearts out in a brilliant all-round team performance, and Liam Douthwaite giving a man-of-the-match display, Brooklyn held on to lift the trophy.

Brooklyn had less luck in the York Minor League Cup semi-final as they lost 3-1 to Dringhouses, coming out second best despite giving their all.

After going behind early on, Brooklyn missed chances to equalise as Dews headed wide and Gaughan hit a stinging 20-yard drive just over, and the visitors doubled their lead with a free-kick just after half-time.

Brooklyn’s top scorer, Barrett, pulled a goal back following good approach play by Botham and Stannard, while Liam Wheeler and Gaughan went close to equalising.

But the visitors sealec their place in the final with a third goal 10 minutes from time.

This was therefore Brooklyn U16s’ last match together, and the players and parents gave a special thank you to manager Chris Brigham and coach Paddy Hill for all of their hard work over the years.
