RUNNING has been high on the agenda at Pickering Junior School.

Leading runners raced in the North Yorkshire cross-country finals, having already achieved success in the Ryedale & Whitby Sports Cluster finals in the autumn term.

Year 3 pupils Anya Potter-Firth and Mathilda Gledhill performed particularly well in their event, finishing sixth and 13th respectively out of 90 runners.

All the pupils at Pickering, though, have been working on their fitness this term in order to part in the Sport Relief Mile last Friday as part of the BBC charity extravaganza.

The children joined staff and parents to run twice around the nearby Lady Lumley's School field, in aid of the charity.

Sports co-ordinator Hazel Winter said: "We were lucky to be blessed with such good weather and it was wonderful to see the camaraderie and encouragement the children gave each other to finish the course and raise money for Sport Relief."

The pupils will continue the fitness theme for the rest of the term, with a timed running test at the end.
