FOUR Ryedale Judo Club aces starred at the North & East Yorkshire Closed Championships at Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford – returning home with three gold medals and one silver.

Brothers Michael and William Scott shared top honours in the under-17s category.

They had wins against all the rest of the players in their pool, giving Michael, 15, gold in the under-50 kilos category and William, 13, gold in the under-55 kilo category.

A big, battling fight between the two was also a sight to behold.

Club-mate Brandon Cowton, 13, fought in the U17s under-60 kilos category for the first time.

He led against his junior Team GB opponent, moving him about successfully until he was caught with a brilliant Ippon Seoi Nage straight out of the textbook, giving his opponent a decisive 10-point score.

This seemed to inspire Cowton on to greater things, though, and he threw his second opponent with a superb Hiza Guruma (knee wheel) in the first five seconds. This earned him the silver medal.

Bryony Elliott, the club’s junior coach, was also fighting to keep her county title in the under-63 kilos senior section.

Fighting in a combined weight category, she had a couple of testy bouts with current Junior Team GB representative Emma Grocock – but also retained her crown.
