Brooklyn Under-16s gained a 2-0 York Minor League victory over Tadcaster Magnets thanks to two goals of the highest standard.

The first came when Matthew Watson’s right-wing cross was clinically dispatched with a left-foot volley by man-of-the-match Ryan Gaughan.

The second came mid-way through the second half when Liam Douthwaite’s long clearance was chased down by Watson, who coolly lobbed the advancing goalkeeper from 25 yards.

There were good performances from Shaun Harland, Liam Wheeler, and a solid display when called upon by ‘keeper Nick Lock.

Heslerton U16s lost 8-3 to high-flying Fishburn Park at windy Whitby – but in doing so at least became the first team to score against the Scarborough & District U16 Minor League front-runners.

Park netted six goals with the wind behind them and made it seven after the break before Josh Till got Hezzy off the mark. Brandon Lee Horsfall and Johnny Reed also netted for the visitors.

Ian Kerr scored within 60 seconds – and finished with four goals – as Brooklyn U15s maintained their fine 2013 form in their first game of 2014, winning 9-3 at Aviva in the York Minor League.

Robbie Butler also hit a hat-trick, with Baron Gregory and Jack Cross also netting.

Aviva also played some good football, and, despite coming up against strong defending, bagged three goals, at one point coming back to 5-3.

Brooklyn U13s enjoyed a 7-1 victory over derby rivals Old Malton U13s.

Jamie Allen’s opener was cancelled out by Malton, while Anthony Boyes had to make some corking saves to keep the hosts from adding to their tally. But Brooklyn then turned up the gas and scored through Harry Cooper, Tom Warburton, the excellent Stephen Kerr (2), Allen and defender Jake Fraser, who was outstanding throughout.

Old Malton U12s were unlucky to lose 2-1 at home to Tadcaster Magnet Blues.

Tad went two up but Malton continued to play good football and were rewarded when Patrick Jackson scored. Continued pressure could not bring a leveller, Joseph Matique hitting the crossbar in the last minute.

It was still an excellent team performance, with William Thomas, Matique and Josh Lee standing out.

Pickering Town U11s moved joint top of York & Ryedale Mitchell Sports League division two with an 8-4 win at Dunnington.

Midfielder Sam Booth, an excellent December recruit, broke the deadlock and Isaac Finch’s cross was turned in for an own goal. Billy Fewster scored twice and Finch netted after more good work by Booth.

Dunnington struck back twice but Morgan Kendrew made it 6-2 at the break with a neat shot.

Dunnington got on top and scored again but Noah Gittins pounced on a poor goal kick to score at the other end, and Charlie Hancock made it eight before a late riposte.

Old Malton U11s got the new year off to a good start, with a 1-0 win over Rawcliffe Warriors.

Malt took control from the start but could not get a goal past the superb Rawcliffe goalkeeper until Arthur Rees netted with three minutes to go. Before then, Rees had had five or more shots, Miles Rodgers had four efforts, one a super header tipped over, and Bradley Machent hit the bar.

Brooklyn U11s beat Wigginton Grasshoppers 4-0. The Ryedale team started quickly and were soon in the lead as Rowan Ford squared the ball for Eden Cross to tap into an open net. Great defending from man-of-the-match Levi Ellis kept Hoppers at bay, before a James Barker cross into the Wigginton box was turned in by one of their defenders.

Ford got his second with a great individual effort, though his day was marred by injury. Brooklyn were then kept at bay until the last five minutes when Billy Leech scored.

Josh Mann’s hat-trick was a bright point as Heslerton U11s lost 9-3 to Scholes Park Raiders.

Goalkeeper Ben Peckitt excelled and defender Charlie Richardson was man of the match in Heslerton U9s’ match at Scholes Park Raiders.

Heslerton U7s played well against Thornton-le-Dale U7s. Myles Johnson and Max Taylor-Barber scored, with Jake Allardice the man of the match. Matthew Moss was man of the match in the second game between the sides.
