Garry Milne got the week-long Scarborough Angling Festival off to the best possible start, winning the opening two rounds on the match lake at Wykeham Fishery at the weekend.

He drew peg 35 on Saturday, weighing-in with 16lb 3oz, and peg 38 on the Sunday, where he recorded 23lb 4oz. On each occasion it was long pole and either pellet or maggot that accounted for skimmers and crucian carp.

Norton’s Brian Jordan led the way in the York midweek match on the No 4 pond at Oak Tree Leisure, Huby, banking 66lb 8oz from peg seven.

Alternating between pellet and paste down the track with the pole, he had an all-carp catch with fish up to the 5lb mark.

Jim Pearson and Tim Wilson level pegged in second place with 51lb apiece, taking some cracking grass carp along the way, with individual specimens tipping the scales at 12.5lb.

A touch of fresh water in the River Derwent made for hard going last week, but did not stop Mark Sellars from making it two wins in a row in Huttons Ambo AC’s evening series down the rail-end.

Fishing at peg 17 behind Bog Wood with pole and maggot, he took a 1lb roach plus a few gudgeon and tommy ruffe for 1lb 4oz.

Paul Thompson secured second place with a 6oz roach and 25 gudgeon from peg 24, recording 1lb 1oz at the final whistle.

Huttons Ambo AC stage the Jimmy Cockerill Memorial Open match on the River Derwent this Sunday.

The draw will take place in the Union, Norton, at 8.30am, with fishing taking place from the swing bridge down to the rail-end. For more information, phone Paul Thompson on 01653 618602.

Ken Herbert won Friday’s Contemptibles match on Don’s pond, West Heslerton, with 28lb 15oz.

Fishing up in the water with the bungee method and maggot on the eight-and-a-half-metre pole, he took a steady procession of quality roach and rudd to the 12oz mark before the carp moved in to see him bank 15 specimens to 1.5lb apiece.

Terry Bloodsworth led the chasing pack with 10lb 6oz.

Skimmers were the target quarry at Rosedale Fishery in Monday’s Contemptibles match, where John Collier faired best with a catch of 14lb 14oz. Pole and pellet at peg 17 was his method.

Howard Pulford fished at peg 21 and came agonisingly close, finishing just half an ounce short of the winner with 14lb 13.5oz.
