RYAN Whitley has re-joined Vanarama National League North side Scarborough Athletic on a permanent deal following his exit from York City.

Whitley’s departure was confirmed by the Minstermen by mutual consent yesterday, bringing an end to the shot-stopper’s long stay at City.

Though playing a starring role in York’s 1-1 draw at Notts County last season, he has struggled to replicate that form, falling behind David Stockdale and more recently Rory Watson in the pecking order.

George Sykes-Kenworthy’s arrival from Bradford (Park Avenue) proved to be the final straw for the academy-grown stopper, who will hope to achieve regular first-team football with the Seadogs.

Whitley, who had risen through the ranks at City, departed having made 27 appearances for the Minstermen, including 11 this season.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: "What a ride it’s been. Nearly 10 years at the club with its ups and downs but I have enjoyed my time here.

"Shared a changing room with some great guys but it’s time for a new chapter in my career!

"Wish everyone associated with the club the best."

The 24-year-old is no stranger to Scarborough fans, having enjoyed three spells at the Flamingo Land Stadium.

That includes a loan spell that was cut short due to an injury to Stockdale earlier this season, Whitley returning to the Minstermen having kept two clean sheets in three appearances.

He will provide strong competition to regular goalkeeper Joe Cracknell as Scarborough seek to improve on their 19th placed league position.

The Seadogs are preparing for one of the biggest games in their history as they host Sky Bet League Two struggles Forest Green Rovers in the Emirates FA Cup First Round on Saturday (3pm), in which Whitley could feature.
