Thornton-le-Dale’s Barrie Darrell won the clubman ‘A’ class at Thirsk District Motor Club’s Kilburn trial held at Low Kilburn Grange on Sunday.

Sixty competitors rode around old quarries and the scattered woodland at the famous old White Horse doing battle over a four-lap, 10-section course.

Darrell, now returning to form, held off a strong challenge from Great Ayton’s Paul Tate and Alan Carr, with Ray Foulkes in fourth. Tate, a little rusty after a long lay-off, blew the chance of victory when losing seven marks on the tree root steps and one on the slippy climb. Foulkes and Darrell put great rides together on the ninth, the only ones to remain clean there.

There was also a wealth of experience at the sharp end in clubman ‘B’. Pickering’s Dave Wardell kept his head after a slack mark went astray on section one and he made no more mistakes, leaving Bryan Kendra two adrift at the finish and Anthony Wardell, in his first ride after injury early in the year, in third.

Northallerton’s 2013 Northern Group Trials champion, Phil Kettlewell, won the expert class with Pocklington’s Ollie Kendra second.
