OBITUARY
Philip George Skelton - The funeral service for Philip George Skelton was held at St John the Baptist Church, Stamford Bridge, on Monday, July 18, followed by creation at York Crematorium. The service was conducted by the Reverend Maggy Ellison. The organist was Sheila Wright. Donations in lieu of flowers were for St Leonard’s Hospice and church funds. Philip, who was born on April 9, 1952, grew up at Rectory Farm, Low Catton. He attended Stamford Bridge Primary and completed his education at Fulford County Secondary School. Here he was good at football, tennis and chess. His uncle George taught him to play bowls and he played for Stamford Bridge. In his teenage and adult life he developed a keen interest in British history and spent a lot of holidays visiting stately homes and castles. Philip learned to cook from his mother, Freda, and loved to entertain to show off his cooking skills. Philip always enjoyed the company of friends, going for a drink and a meal. He loved horse racing and liked to watch football and was a great Liverpool supporter. He was very musical and played both six and 12-string guitars in acoustic bands. He became good friends with Chris Simpson whose band Magna Carta is very well known and a track from one of their CDs was played at the start of the service. Last September he became terminally ill and moved into Manor Court where he was supported by his family and friends. He spent his final weeks in St Leonard’s Hospice until he passed away peacefully on June 29. Phil used to write poetry and one was read by the vicar, another by Chris Simpson of Magna Carta. Phil could be described as a bit of a loner who liked to do his own thing and he lived life to the full. He had a gentle nature and would do anything to help anyone. Phil will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Chief mourners were his cousins Angela and Leslie Crozier, Shirley and Joe Lancaster, Robert and Lorraine Skelton, Anita and Fred Wyatt, Malcolm Skelton, Graham Skelton and Pam, Ellen and Bruce Barham and special friends Mr and Mrs Chris Simpson of Magna Carta, Bryony and Dave Wright and Richard Pateman and family.
