BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Queen’s birthday - There will be a meeting in the village hall on Friday at 7pm to discuss the arrangements for a village celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday on Sunday, June 12. Villagers are invited to go and help with planning.

All Saints - The Easter service in All Saints Church was attended by more than 100 people. Children rolled eggs down Castle Hill before the service and they all hunted for eggs in church afterwards. The vicar, assisted by Helen Wright, Dr Don Jones and organist Terry Cartlidge conducted a musical Eucharist. Refreshments were provided or served by Jackie Gray, Liz Eccles, Jenny Wade, Sheelagh Howell, Dr Elizabeth Potts and Dr Mary Jones. Thanks are also due to everyone who decorated the church with Easter displays. The service on Sunday will be an 11am Communion.

FARNDALE

Chapel - High Farndale Chapel’s anniversary will be celebrated on Saturday at 7pm when the Newton Choir will visit the chapel. There will be supper at close and collection for chapel funds. The annual daffodil service will be held in the chapel on Sunday, April 10 at 2.30pm.

Book sale - A paperback book sale will be held in the village hall on Saturday starting at 11am. Refreshments will be available.

Charity Concert Update - All money donated at the concert at the Lion Inn, Blakey, on October 23 has been collected. A total of £3,000 has been raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This includes recent donations, including one from the Low Mill Shoot.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Bowls club – There will be a bowls club open day for people of all ages on Sunday, April 17 at 2pm. The following Sunday, April 24, between 10 am and 2pm there will be a coaching day with Bowls England and Yorkshire Bowling Association coaches. KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Concert – The Zoffany Ensemble will be returning to the Memorial Hall at 7pm on Saturday to play a concert of chamber music by Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms. Tickets are available from Penny Bank Café, Kirkbymoorside; the Royal Oak, Gillamoor and on the door. The concert is in aid of Gillamoor Playing Field and Farndale Village Hall.

All Saints - The monthly coffee morning in church will be held on Saturday from 9.30am to noon. The Parochial Church Council will meet in church on Monday, April 4 at 7.30pm.

Bridge club - Members making up the 10 tables for the latest game were confronted with difficult hands, reflected in the low winning scores. At North/South, Mary Mortonson and Chris Baxter were top with 56.6 per cent followed by the partnership of Clarissa Napier and Christine Brett on 53.3 per cent. Ann Scott and Frank Bailey won East/West with 51 per cent. Enid Watson and Tim Johnson were runners-up with 50 per cent. The new partnership of Christine Fields and Caroline Peall Clegg played well, making three outright tops and earned the play of the week award.

Entertainment – The act at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday is Dave Weston. The entertainment on Saturday, April 9 will be provided by Jim Macabe. Both start at 8.30pm.

Environment group - The next give or take day will be on Sunday, April 10 from 9am to noon in the Memorial Hall. Goods may be delivered the day before, Saturday, April 9, from 6pm to 8pm, and on Sunday from 8am onwards. Refreshments will be available, and the funds from these will be shared between Kirkbymoorside in Bloom and the Cycle Track Fund.

Coffee morning – There will be a coffee morning with stalls for Shoebox Appeal at the Methodist Church schoolroom on Wednesday, April 6 from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Camera club - The next meeting of Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club is on Thursday, April 7 when Keaton Roebuck will give a lecture entitled, My Way 5.

Fashion - Karen Johnson of Tulchan ladieswear will show the latest fashions to members of the WI in the Methodist school hall on Monday, April 4, at 7.15pm.

Manor Close - The next domino drive at the centre is on Wednesday, April 13 at 7.30pm and is in aid of centre funds.

Tuesday Group - The Rev Tanya Brosnan will be the guest speaker at Tuesday Group meeting on Tuesday, April 12 in the Methodist Church Jubilee room at 7.30pm.The leader will be Anne and the tea hostesses are Jean and Margaret. The district spring day at Lidgett Grove, York, is on Thursday, April 21.

Daffodil walk - The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie will hold its daffodil sponsored walk on Saturday, April 16. Sponsorship forms are available from June Cook, phone 01751 431160. There are two walks, starting at 10am.

MARTON AND NORMANBY

Gardening Club - The March meeting was opened by the president, Bill Tweddle. After notices he introduced speaker Gill Hodgson whose talk was called Growing For Cutting -Cut Flowers From Your Garden. Gill gave an insight into how her career as a commercial grower started, beginning with growing flowers from her own garden, selling surplus in buckets outside her door ,to attending farmers markets and now to provide flowers for weekly weddings. She brought foliage and anenomies from her garden and she demonstrated how to make a arrangement. She donated two bunches as prizes for the raffle. The next meeting will be in Marton Village Hall on Tuesday, April 12 at 7.30pm when Liz Bassindale will talk about the Howardian Hills - an area of outstanding beauty. The members’ monthly competition is for a miniature plate garden of spring flowers. New members are welcome to join on the night. Admission is £2 and includes tea, coffee, biscuits and an entry into the raffle.

NAWTON

Quiz – The Friends of Nawton Primary School have a general knowledge quiz sheet available. There are 50 questions and are in the local shops. Entries should to be returned to the school by Saturday, May 7. The winners will be announced at the school’s spring fair on Saturday, May 21.

Bingo - A prize bingo in aid of village hall funds is being held in the village hall on Saturday at 7.30pm.

PICKERING

Referendum meeting - There will be a public meeting about the European Union referendum in the Memorial Hall tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm. Speakers will set out reasons to vote to leave the EU. Questions will be allowed from the audience. Admission is free. Dialect evening - Adam Collier will present an evening of Yorkshire dialect at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Friday at 7.30pm. It will include a pie and peas supper with the pies supplied by Auntie Ann’s Bakery of Helmsley. There will also be a raffle including prizes of meals for two and family days out. The evening is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society on Wednesday, April 6 in the WRVS Hungate Centre at 7pm.

Farmers’ market – This month’s farmers’ market will be held on Thursday, April 7 in the Market Place from 8.30am.

Stamp collection - Used postage stamps are being collected at the Royal Mail Office, Thornton Road Industrial Estate, for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Stamps may be left Monday to Saturday between 8.30am and 1.30pm.

Fishkeepers - There will be a meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society on Wednesday, April 6 held in the Mill Suite, Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, at 7.30pm. The topic will be on how to prepare fish for the showing bench workshop.

Country and Western – Tickets, costing £12, are on sale for the Pickering Town Football Club’s annual Country and Western evening which will feature the Henry Smith Band at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday at 7.30pm. Meditation - There will be weekly talks and meditation every Wednesday at the Friends’ Meeting House, Castlegate, starting on Wednesday, April 6 to Wednesday, May 18, and Wednesday, June 8 to Wednesday, July 13. Weekly draw - The £1,125 main prize in last week’s Pickering Town FC Super Draw was not won with the numbers 23, 27 and 24. This week’s draw will be increased. The April monthly consolation prize draw will be a rollover draw for £100 and held on Monday, April 4.

Dominoes - Orchard Close Community Centre holds weekly domino drives on Mondays at 7.30pm. Bingo sessions are also held on Tuesdays at 7pm and Fridays at 2pm.

Coffee morning - The Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion holds coffee mornings at its headquarters, Legion House, Champley’s Yard, every Monday and Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. With the help of the children, the stone covering the tomb entrance in the Easter garden was rolled away and the Easter Candle was lit for the first time. The children also helped illustrate the gospel reading showing how some of the words of the gospel can be used to spell out word Easter. While they went on an Easter egg hunt Richard reflected on the gospel reading of the resurrection story. Dot Francis read one of the Bible readings, Clare Firth and Sue Johnson were sidespersons and Julie and Mick Stephenson served refreshments. Kate and Kieron Middleton assisted with the distribution of communion. The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided and preached at the 11am modern communion service, weighing up the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection. He also led the prayers. Mary Otway gave the Bible reading and Elizabeth Bradley assisted with the chalice. Richard Fuller (guitar) led the sung worship with John and Sue Grice (guitars and bass) and John Taylor (drums). Jenny Bland ran the Sunday Club, Julie Hall and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments and Jo Taylor was the sidesperson.

Methodists - The Easter service on Sunday was led by Christine Fenwick assisted by Jean Brown. The organist was Doreen Lawson, vestry steward John Earnshaw and the welcomer was Margaret Neave. The service began with the Lenten elements being removed from the cross and the cross being thatched with spring flowers brought by the congregation. Jean Brown told the story of the first Easter day and Sheila Gray read The Resurrection from St Luke’s gospel. Christine and Jean gave the congregation bells and streamers to accompany the joyful hymns and Bert Blower accompanied on the drum. In her address Christine said that the stone in front of the tomb was not rolled back so that Jesus could get out but so that we could get in. Folded paper crosses with the Easter message on them were given out by Ann Newham. Refreshments were served after the service. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Denise Free and Holy Communion will be observed.

SHERBURN

Letters draw – Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday produced the letters G H W. As there was no winner, next week’s prize fund is £360.

Community Club - Over The Limit will be playing at the sports club on Friday and on Saturday, April 16, Sammi Lee will make a return visit. The last two bingo sessions will take place on Saturday and Saturday, April 23, at 8pm.

Sherburn Cof E School - The Easter worship took the form of a pilgrimage which began at the Methodist Chapel. Palm crosses were distributed and Rev Denise Free spoke of the events of Holy week from Palm Sunday. She told of Jesus leaving the upper room to go to the garden so everyone left the chapel to go to the village hall garden. There Rev Joe Kinsella told the children about the crucifixion and gave out pieces of ribbon which were tied to the cross. Everyone moved on to St Hilda’s Church and celebrated the resurrection. As a symbol of new life the children planted seeds. Headteacher Alison Stephenson gave out all the awards that the children had earned this term. The worship would also help to prepare the children for the pilgrimage of the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, when he visits Sherburn in May.

St Hilda’s - A reflective service on Good Friday was led by Rev Joe Kinsella. It was a quiet time of contemplation to think of the events of the crucifixion. The next service at St Hilda’s will be on Sunday, April 10 when lay minister Barbara Grice will lead worship at 10.30am.

Methodist news - Friends from Sherburn joined with Ayton at the Methodist Church for a Maundy Thursday Communion service led by the Minister, Rev Denise Free. On Good Friday there was a service of meditation on the cross led by the worship team. The service leader was Liz Aconley and Sandra Cade was the prayer leader. Readers were Jean Brown, Janet Tebb, Mary Dickinson, Kiara and India Heron, Janet Magee and Chris Cade, who also played the organ. Afterwards, the church family joined together for a meal. The Easter celebration service on Sunday was led by Diane Robinson and the cross of pain was transformed into a thing of beauty and joy as it was decorated with flowers. Anglican friends were also welcomed to join in worship. Refreshments were enjoyed after worship. The service on Sunday will be an all-age family service at 10.30am led by Christine Fenwick and Jean Brown. A buffet lunch will follow.

Forest project – The 1st Sherburn Rainbows and Brownie Unit are working on the ‘Schools4forests’ project. The goal is to teach the girls about forests and to raise money to help reduce tropical forest destruction. The funds raised will go towards work in Tanzania in collaboration with the Udzungwa Forest Project. This aims to improve protection of tropical forests through research, management, community education and training. So far the girls are lying third in this international project, a quite a feat for such a young group. If they win they get to name a new species of tree. The deadline for giving is midnight tomorrow (Thursday). THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The duplicate competition held on Monday, March 21 was won by Janet Sutor aned Sue Shuttleworth with 69.3 per cent. In second place were George and Pat Donnor with 59.6 per cent.

WESTOW

Spring fair - There will be a spring fair in the village hall on Saturday, April 2 from 10.30am until 1pm. There are already various stalls including locally made fresh bread, pork pies, sausage rolls and puddings, gifts, knitted items, handmade cards, knitted items, bird feeders, and bird feeders. Westow Cricket club are also having stalls selling cakes and home baking, second hand books and bric-a-brac in aid of its pavilion project. There will also be a tombola, tea and coffee.
