Charity night - The Plum Street day centre in Norton will benefit from the charity night at the Half Moon Inn featuring adult comedian Adrian Lee on Friday at 8.30pm. Christmas fair – Money raised at the Christmas fair in the village hall on Saturday, December 5, between 2pm and 4pm will be in aid of church funds with a donation to the village hall fund. Stalls include stocking fillers, produce, bring and buy and a tombola. Entry tickets are £2 to include refreshments and a draw. It is free for children. Craft fair - Dementia Forward Ryedale are holding a craft fair and coffee morning in the village hall on Saturday from 10am to noon. It will include a tombola.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Poppy concert - All Saints Church hosted a poppy concert in aid of the Royal British Legion on Saturday, November 7. Bell ringers, led by Martin Tubbs, rang for an hour before the concert started. People were greeted with a glass of wine and light refreshments as they browsed the exhibition, Threads of War, which was displayed around the church. The contemporary textiles exhibition, created and set up by Annie Parkinson and her team, was in remembrance of the World War One. There were also exhibits created by local residents ranging from a display of fresh flowers to a waterfall of crepe paper poppies cascading over the edge of the pulpit. On one side of the nave was a reminder of a battlefield - bare tree branch decorated with a mass of hand-knitted red poppies. Children from Brompton-by-Sawdon Primary School had a collage display and drawings based on the book War Horse. Pianist Julia Spencer played for the first half an hour while people socialised and explored the textile exhibition. Manhattan Voices, a choir based at Scarborough Music Academy in Wykeham, led by Sue Hartley, sang a range of music varying from gospel songs to Dvorak’s Song to the Moon. Their performance was interspersed with readings performed by local residents, taking World War One. The choir rounded off the evening with a selection of songs from Les Miserables featuring singer Michael O’Brien. After the audience joined in with the National Anthem, the concert was completed with Terry Cartlidge playing finale music on the organ. The organisers would like to thank all who helped to make the evening possible. The textile exhibition will remain in church for this week feom 9.30am to 4pm. Proceeds from the event will go to the Royal British Legion.

History Society - Jonathan Botham, spoke about his great grandmother, Elizabeth Botham, and her Whitby-based bakery at the November meeting of Brompton Local History Society. Her family have followed in her footsteps down to the fifth generation. The society’s next meeting is in the village hall on December 2 at 7.30pm when Martin Arnold of Hull University speak about Ragnar Hairy Breeches who ended his life in a pit full of snakes.

Quiz – There will be a quiz in the village hall on Friday at 7.30pm.

Fest 15 - The miniature Christmas Tree festival in aid of All Saints Church starts on Friday, December 4. About 35 small trees will fill the church, lit with mini lights and decorated to reflect the themes chosen by local groups, individuals and businesses. The trees will be unveiled at 6.30pm when the preview viewing starts with refreshments in the church. Those present will then be entertained by an hour of seasonal music and verse, including contributions by Brompton and Sawdon Community Primary School Choir. The Fest continues with the annual Christmas fair on Saturday, December 5 starting at 2pm in the village Hall. There will be a wide variety of stalls and tea and mince pies. The church will be open for people to combine the fair with Christmas tree festival viewing.

Service - The morning prayer service at All Saints on Sunday is from 11am to 11.45am.

BULMER

Bridge club - Lesley and Arthur Conner won the meeting on Thursday, November 12 with 64.6 per cent. Second were Hazel and Charles Ward with 63.8 per cent.

CAYTON

Over 60s - Margaret Pattison, chairman, welcomed 23 members of the Over 60s Club to their weekly meeting in the village hall. Bingo was called by Mrs Pattison and Mrs M Bogg who also organised the raffle. The refreshments were served by Mrs M Bogg and Mrs A Dowson.

Whist drive - A military whist drive was held in the village hall and raised £18 for hall funds. The MC was Bob Cowton and four tables were in play. The raffle was organised by Trevor Davies. Mrs A Dowson prepared the refreshments.

Women’s Fellowship – Members of the Women’s Fellowship were welcomed to their recent meeting in Cayton Chapel by the president, Gwyneth Russell. After short devotions, Jean Hanson gave a short talk about jewellery making. Members then made bracelets to take home. Hymns were sung unaccompanied and after the meeting Jane Williams and Joan Dunnell served the refreshments. The fellowship’s next meeting is a visit to the shoebox depot in Scarborough where members will see what happens to the shoeboxes they donate to Operation Christmas Child. The early December meeting is the Christmas meal. The next time the fellowship meet in the chapel will be on Tuesday, December 15 when the Rev Chris Kirkman will lead the Christmas carol service.

CROPTON

Village hall - Thornton-le-Dale ukulele band paid their second visit of the year to the village on Friday, November 13 and were welcomed by an enthusiastic audience. They played well known music with a sing-along. Tea and biscuits were served and a raffle drawn.

HELMSLEY

Poppy fund – The Royal British Legion women`s section raised £ 370.60 for the Poppy Fund at a prize bingo on Wednesday, November 4. The organisers wish to thank their supporters, particularly caller Nick Boyes.

Menzown - Members of Menzown listened to a selection of their favourite records at their last meeting. The choice of music ranged from Frank Sinatra to Dire Straits. The DJ was Rhys Thomas. The vote of thanks to Rhys was given by the chairman Richard Sharpe.

Christmas market - There will be more than 30 stalls in the main street and the Memorial Hall at the Christmas market on Saturday, November 28. Real reindeers will be in attendance. Activities and events will take place at specific times, and are as follows - activities for children in the library 10.30am to noon; Kirkbymoorside Brass band’s rendition of Christmas music in the main street next to Christmas Tree from 11am; stalls open from 11am to 3pm; Santa in his grotto noon to 2pm; Santa in the Memorial Hall Dugout Christmas treasure hunt and fancy dress from 3pm. Prizes will be awarded for these competitions and include Castle Howard Christmas family pass, four passes for the Mouseman experience at Kilburn, North York Moors Steam Railway 2016 family travel voucher, family Santa's Sleigh experience at the Farmer's Cart. Carols will be sung around the tree by the Helmsley Arts Centre Community Choir and Kirkbymoorside Junior Band at 3pm to 3.30pm and the Christmas lights will be switched on at 4pm.

Film show - The film Marvellous will be shown at the Tueday Group's meeting on Tuesday, November 24 at the Methodist school room at 7.30pm.

Manor Close - The next domino drive at the centre will be on Wednesday, November 25 at 7.30pm.

Ladies Fellowship - Dorothy Collis opened the November meeting with a poem and prayer on the theme of giving is more blessed than receiving. Cathie Hather did a sugar craft workshop with 30 enthusiastic members, making poinsettia flowers and holly. Everyone went home with a decoration for the Christmas cake. Colleen Nicoll celebrated a birthday in October and this month’s birthday girl was new member, Linda Wilson. It was also past member, Joyce Miller’s birthday and a card had been sent to her in Scotland. The tea hostesses were Vera Kendall and Ann Potter. The Christmas party is on Wednesday, December 9 at 7.30 pm in the Methodist Schoolroom when members will be entertained by a ukulele band and share a faith supper. Members should note the change of venue.

AGM - The Moorside Bar, formerly the Royal British Legion, is having its annual general meeting on Tuesday, November 24 at 7.30pm. The entertainer on Saturday is Ian James, starting at 8.30pm. There will be no bingo on Friday or Friday, November 27.

Bridge club - Lesley and Tim Vessey won North/South with 63.4 percent at the latest session. Bob Wardell ans Barry Smith were second on 60.8 per cent. East/West winners were Di and Andy Brannan with 66.2 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson were runners-up with 62.9 per cent. Play of the week went to Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale.

Amnesty International – The Kirkbymoorside branch’s Write for Rights greetings card campaign runs through November and December. Signing cards will be done at the Summit Bakery on Wednesday, November 25 from 10am to noon. The monthly meeting and signing will be held on Thursday, December 3 at 1.30pm at Pickering Meeting House.

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club held its first open competition of the year last Thursday at the Moorside Bar and Club. The winning print was by Bob Ordidge, and their were three maximum point winners in the projected digital image section – Liz Bassindale, Julie Cowdy, and Jim Cavanagh. The next meeting at the MB and C is tomorrow (Thursday) when Richard Spurdons from Ilkley, will give a lecture entitled Landscape to Studio.

All Saints Church - The Christingle service will be on Sunday, November 29 at 6.30pm.

Bowling club – The next domino drive is on Saturday in the club house at 7.30pm. All are welcome.

Fun fair - The annual fun fair comes to town on tomorrow (Thursday) and will run each evening until Monday. It will also be open on Saturday afternoon.

Kirkby Fest - Kirkbymoorside History Group are hosting an all-day event at the Moorside Room today (Wednesday). It will include the showing at 2pm and 6pm of a film commemorating the 2013 Kirkby Fest and a display of collage 1960s photographs. Displays of 1960s photographs by the School History Group and other young people will be on show at the library and will be judged on Saturday morning. A film, which captured some of the creative collaboration between John Arden and his wife Margaretta between 1963 and 1965 will also be shown at the library. A small display also pays tribute to Arden's play Left-Handed Liberty for the Magna Carta celebrations in London’s Mermaid Theatre in 1965 and this year at the Mansion House Guildhall School of Music and Drama). Bridge club - The third session of Malton Bridge Club’s principal pairs competition was won by John and Beryl Bramall with a score of 63.5 per cent. Philip Mason and John Hayton were second with 60.4 per cent while Chris Baxter and Graham Burgess were third with 58.3 per cent Last Wednesday’s positional pairs session was won by Derek Fox and Richard Hilton, ahead of Mike Jackson and Philip Mason, then Tricia Pearce and Madge Allison. In Sunday’s Yorkshire League fixtures, Malton A got the season off to an inauspicious start, losing 20-0 at Sheffield A. Malton B fared a little better, losing 14-6 to Doncaster B.

MIDDLETON

Lacemakers - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Lacemakers held in the village hall on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Crafts - There will be a meeting of the craft club held in the village hall tomorrow (Thursday) from 7pm to 9pm. Admission is £2 which includes tea or coffee and biscuits.

Phillipa Jode will hold a felt picture making craft day in the hall from 10am to 2pm on Sunday. The cost is £10, which includes tea or coffee and biscuits, but participants should take their own lunch.

Fitness and health - Helen Walker will give illustrated talk called Physiotherapy and Acupuncture, Keep Fit and Healthy over Winter in the village hall on Thursday, November 26.

OSGODBY

New chairman - Before the start of the monthly community council meeting, Coun Christine Jones was elected to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the former chairman, Coun Amanda Evirgen, who has relocated to Newcastle. Scarborough Borough Council has suggested that parish councils may like to hold an event to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday next June. If sufficient residents are willing to help organise such an event, the village council will form a committee to make the arrangements. Arrangements were made for the village green Christmas tree lights switch-on on Saturday, November 28 at 7pm. The Salvation Army band will be present.

Ladies club - A display of chocolate delights greeted members attending their monthly meeting at the community centre to hear Alex Grant, of Croft’s Artisan Chocolates of Scarborough, speak about the development of his business in Newborough.

Bingo - A bingo evening was run at the community centre with Les Craggs as caller, Janet McNamara and Moira Audsley as cashiers and Margaret Rogers and Christine Hastie as checkers. Refreshments were served by Anita Wilkinson and Irene Barnett. The raffle was run by Mrs McNamara. Members were sad to learn of the death of long-time member Audrey Hughes when Mrs Audsley paid tribute to her support over many years.

PICKERING

Annual meeting - The annual general meeting of the Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion will be held on Saturday at Champley’s Yard Pickering at 2pm. For further information, phone the secretary on 01751 474446.

Flower club - The next meeting of Pickering and District Flower Club will be held on Wednesday, November 25 at the WRVS Hungate Centre at 7.30pm. It will be a practice night with a Christmas theme. Probus club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met under the chairmanship of Michael Pearson on Tuesday, November 10 for lunch at the Forest and Vale Hotel. Marjorie Walker gave a talk called Men Talk – Or Do They?’ which including her work in prisons. Graham Turner proposed the vote of thanks. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 8.

Fruit growing - Hilary Dobson, chairman of the Northern Fruit Growers will give a talk on growing fruit in the North East to the Hardy Plant Group of the Pickering Horticultural Society in the Memorial Hall tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be available after the talk Coffee morning - The annual Dogs Trust coffee morning will be held at the WRVS Hungate Centre, on Saturday from 10am to noon. There will be lots stalls selling cakes and bric-a-brac, a tombola and raffle. Contributions to the stalls will be most welcome.

Fish talk - At the October meeting of Ryedale Aquarist Society, Ian and Norma Mitchell of the NEYGEKA spoke about the public aquariums of Singapore and the Palma Aquarium in Majorca.

At the November meeting, DJAY members Jamie Horne and Ben Nicholls talked about fish collecting in Uruguay 2015, the Amsterdam Siamese fighting fish and Kaz show 2015. The society’s annual general meeting will be held in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, November 25 at 7.30pm.

Weekly draw -There was no winner of last week’s main prize of £525 in the weekly Pickering Town FC Super Draw with the numbers 6, 21 and 27. This week’s draw will be increased to £600.

Kirk Theatre - Ryedale Choral Union and guests will present It’s a Grand Night for Singing on Saturday at 7.30pm at the theatre. Events are also planned in the Memorial Hall, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and Beck Isle Museum. Fr Anthony will bless the Christmas tree before the switch on at 6pm. Santa will be appearing in his sleigh and then in his grotto from 5pm.

Antique fair – The Memorial Hall will stage an antique and collectors fair on Saturday and Sunday, November 28 and 29. Refreshments will be available all day.

Museum - Beck Isle Museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm with last admissions at 4pm until Sunday, November 29 which will be the last day for the year. On Saturday, November 28 the museum will hold its Christmas fair from 10am to 4pm with free admission.

RIEVAULX

Contemporary praise - An evening service of contemporary praise and worship for all ages will be held at the Methodist Church on Sunday at 6.30 pm. It will be led by the Simple Harmony Group from Snape, near Bedale. There will be light refreshments after the service.

RILLINGTON

Prize time - Kath Horsley presented the prizes for whist at the Over Sixties Club meeting held in the village hall. Kath Samples presented the prizes at a progressive whist drive held in Woodlands Community Centre. Raffles were held at both events.

Quiz - Mike Williams will be hosting a general knowledge quiz with cash prizes at the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. Entry of £2 per person includes a hot supper. Rubbish clearing - A Love Where You Live action morning to clear rubbish from around the village is being held on Saturday from 9.30am to noon, meeting in the village hall car park. Parkinson’s Support - The November meeting of Ryedale Parkinson's Support Group held at Trinity Methodist Church, Norton, was well attended and included one new member. Kate Paul of Dementia Support Ryedale and Scarborough area was the speaker. The Christmas lunch will be held at the Forest and Vale Hotel, Pickering on December 11, followed in January with the normal second Thursday in the month meeting. St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided at a service of Holy Communion at 9.30am and opened the worship with a short time of prayer and reflection following the terrible events in Paris. During the service he baptised Will and Elizabeth Knight. Doreen Livesey presented cards and books of Bible stories to Will and Elizabeth on behalf of the Mothers’ Union. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Clare Firth and Sue Johnson were sidespersons, and Julie Stephenson served refreshments during the time between the two morning services.

Steve Raettig led the 11am service of modern worship and gave an illustrated talk about Jesus' prediction of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Reader Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and Liz Cremer read. The sung worship was led by Richard Fuller (guitar) with Chloe Proctor (guitar) and John Taylor (drums), and prayer ministry was offered by Rev Moreland and Mary Otway. Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club and Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

MS Cake Break - Andrew and Rachel Watson are hosting an MS Cake Break on Saturday in the Memorial Hall from 10.30am to 1.30pm. This is to raise money for the MS Society and is being held in memory of Andrew's mum, who had suffered from MS for many years and passed away in October 2014. There will be tea, coffee and cake for all guests, as well as a tombola, cake stall and children's activities.

SHERBURN

Letters draw - The letters drawn on Saturday, November 14 in the Sherburn FC draw were O P Y. As there was no winner, next week’s prize fund stands at £360.

Christmas tree lights - The big switch on will be on Saturday, December 5, at 6.30pm. The village hall will be serving refreshments from 6pm. There will be a tombola stall and also a stall where there will be things to buy all beginning with the letter C. If you would like to donate anything, tombola prizes should go to Carol Stephenson and ‘C’ items to Barbara Grice. Admission is £1 which includes refreshments. Proceeds are for village hall funds. The village show organises have donated the Christmas tree.

Auction – There will be an auction to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at the East Riding pub on Saturday. Viewing is at 6.30pm and the sale will start at 7.30pm. The pub will host a quiz tomorrow (Thursday) and on Saturday, December 12, Blade Runner will play live from 9pm.

Methodist news - The worship on Sunday was led by Margaret Crofts. Steward Jean Brown also read the lesson from Mark’s Gospel. Chris Cade read the lesson from Hebrews. Janet Magee played the organ and Frank Crofts operated the audio visual equipment. After the service light refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. Sunday’s service at 10.30am will be led by Laura McGarry.

Bingo – The Community Club will be hosting a cash prize bingo session on Friday. Tickets go on sale from 7.15pm with eyes down at 8pm. Entry is free.

SINNINGTON

Sacred music - Lealholm Choir gave a programme of favourite sacred music to the Sinnington People's Guild on Tuesday, November 10. Led by Carol Harrison and accompanied by Jean Clennen with a solo part sung by Malcolm Greenwood, the congregation joined the choir in singing three hymns. The collection for the work of Martin House Hospice totalled £ 135. Supper was served. The next meeting is on Tuesday, November 24 at 7 15pm when Caroline Neuff will give an illustrated talk entitled The Land Of The Rising Sun.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - Pat Elener welcomed 19 ladies to the November meeting to hear a talk from Angela Spencer and her daughter Molly who own the Sugar Mouse sweet shop and cafe in Easingwold. Angela told members how she got her first job in journalism and worked her way up at to being a crime reporter. When her daughter decided not to go to university because she knew she wanted to bake for a living, they went into business together. They took lots of sweets to the meeting to sample and buy and gave each member a cup cake to enjoy with refreshments. The next meeting will be a Christmas beetle drive on Tuesday, December 8.

Methodists - The service at the Methodist Church last Sunday morning was led by Rievaulx Worship Group with singing by the group and congregation interspersed with readings and meditations and prayers. After the service, a hot Sunday lunch was shared by more than 30 people. This Sunday he service at is a Songs of Praise and members of the congregation are invited to request their favourite hymns and readings. A mothers/carers and toddler group called Little Adventurers meets every Thursday in term time in the Methodist Schoolroom from 1.30pm to 3pm. STAXTON

Remembrance - Fifty-three people including children from Hertford Vale School were at the war memorial for the annual Armistice Day service. A wreath was laid on behalf of the parish residents by Coun Pauline Reeve, chairman of the parish council. Several crosses were placed on the memorial by relatives and friends in memory of family members. Poems were read by three children. To observe the two minutes silence, the Last Post and Reveille was sounded by a member of the Salvation Army. Former Navy man John Flower preceded the children from the school to the service, carrying a banner that was lowered and raised at the appropriate time. The service was conducted and names of all the fallen from the three parishes in the benefice was read out by churchwarden David Birdsall.

Quiz - At the recent quiz held in the sports club with James Armstrong as the quizmaster, the winners were the Willerby Wanderers including Andy Wharton, Helen and Tony Hill. The next quiz will be on Saturday, December 5. Lunch - The latest bangers and mash lunch was held in the village hall on Saturday in aid of hall funds. Helping were, Evelyn Oates, Anne Gabriel, Dorne Scott-Hawkin, Jacqui Keegan, Glynis Davies, Madeline De-la-Porte, Ruth Armstrong, Paul Gabriel, Edwin Cooper and Joyce Mattinson.

A raffle was held. The next lunch will be on Saturday, December 12. The next film show will be on Wednesday, December 2.

Sing-along - There will be a seasonal sing-along of Advent carols and Christmas songs with the Musical Memories in the village hall on Sunday at 6pm. Admission will be free with refreshments provided.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Coffee morning - The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal coffee morning held on Saturday, November 7 in the Hill Memorial Institute raised £345.70. The organisers wish to thank everyone who helped in any way.

Remembrance - A service was held at All Saints Church on Sunday followed by the act of Remembrance at the Hill Memorial Institute war memorial. Rainbows, Beavers, guides and scouts turned out in numbers. Tea was served at the Methodist Church. Stella Downing was presented with a brooch from the Royal British Legion in recognition of her playing the trumpet for the last 28 years. Lauren Breckon is to take her place.

Bridge Club - The duplicate competition held on Monday, November 9 was won by George and Pat Donnor with 59.7 per cent. In joint second place were Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston along with Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 55.6 per cent.

WESTOW

Blue bags – More than 40 bags of unwanted clothes, soft toys, belts, shoes and bags were collected as part of the cricket club’s blue bag collection on Saturday, November 14. The bags will be sold by weight and the money used to help the club cover running expenses. The club would like to thank everyone who donated items.

Christmas fair - Donations of tombola and raffle prizes for the Christmas fair on Saturday, November 28 will be appreciated. Craft fair - The annual craft and gift fair to raise funds for Ryedale Special Families and Peter Simpson’s Trust Fund will be held in the village hall from 7pm on Thursday, December 3. There will be various stalls including jewellery, aloe vera, candles and home baking. There will also be a raffle, tombola and refreshment. Admission is free.
