I WOULD like to offer information regarding one of the pictures in the Gazette & Herald, September 3.
The band is the Malton White Star Band and the photograph was taken in 1912, 10 years after the name change in 1902. In 1899, the band was called the Malton Temperance Band and that name only lasted for three years. Before 1899, the band was in allegiance with the Norton Rifle Brigade and it was this brigade that had white stars on their epaulettes. The white star was adopted as the emblem after the re-naming in 1902.
Cliff Hicks, Malton
