I HAD the pleasure of attending the Malton Stables Open Day on Sunday. It was a marvellous event, the sun came out, the stables were packed with visitors and Malton showcased its excellence as a national training centre.
It was pleasing to learn there are more than 650 thoroughbreds in training in Malton and Norton, and an estimated 200 skilled people employed at the yards.
The horse training industry also supports many local businesses, such as veterinary practices, feed merchants and saddlers and is estimated to be worth £21m to the local economy.
Ryedale has many thriving industries, although horse training is one that is easily forgotten. In my opinion, it is an unsung highlight of Malton and Norton’s economy, and its value to the local community is noteworthy.
