ROBIN Lidster is the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Ryedale Family History Group tonight at Hovingham village hall.

Known as the Magic Lantern Man, Robin will be giving an illuminated talk using a magic lantern that is more than a 100 years old and features original glass slides showing images from the late 1800s of the coastal areas of Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough. The evening will conclude with the showing of some very early moving images.

The magic lantern was an early form of slide projector and has been entertaining and informing children and adults for more than 300 years. Robin has been presenting Magic Lantern shows for 30 years and has an interest in the history of the optical projection world. He is also the author of books on local and railway history of the Yorkshire coast.

The meeting, which starts at 7.30pm, is open to everyone and refreshments will be available along with a raffle. If you live in the area and need transport to this meeting or any future meeting, phone the office and the group will try to arrange this.
