A COALITION of environmental organisations is calling on the government to take action to protect “the UK’s rainforest”.

The RSPB, North Pennines AONB Partnership and the Campaign for National Parks, have all said urgent action is needed in upland peatlands like the North York Moors.

In a letter to both the Secretaries of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Energy and Climate Change, they said only four per cent of England’s upland peatlands is in good condition, and the rest could form vital habitats for rare species and help tackle climate change.

The Yorkshire Dales is home to more blanket bog – the habitat in which peat is formed – than any other national park in England, while the North York Moors and Upper Weardale have been described as carbon sinks because of the amount of peat – which stores carbon and can help balance out greenhouse gases – they sustain.
