A VETERAN RAF airman who witnessed The Great Escape at a notorious German prisoner of war camp will relive his Second World War memories at a North Yorkshire wartime weekend.
Frank Stone was an 18-year-old tailgunner when his Hampden bomber crash-landed in Germany in 1940.
Mr Stone will tell how Stalag Luft III’s hut 104, where the real Great Escape took place, represented an austere home whose occupants lived in constant fear of discovery.
Mr Stone, 88, will give his talk at the Allerton Court Hotel, in Northallerton, at 4pm on Saturday, June 18, and again at 4pm at the Golden Lion Hotel, in the town on Sunday, June 19.
Other events over the weekend include a nostalgia evening dance, a 1940s review, and a Battle of Britain Spitfire flypast.
