A NORTH Yorkshire couple are facing an anxious wait to discover whether life-saving treatment for multiple sclerosis will be made available on the NHS.

Angela Baldock, from Scarborough, was one of the first people in the UK to have a special type of scan designed to show up blocked veins in people suffering with the condition.

The 49-year-old is now waiting to hear if she will be able to undergo a procedure to clear the blockages as part of an NHS research project, with the other option being to pay between £5,000 and £8,000 for private treatment either in Glasgow or abroad.

Mrs Baldock’s husband, Bob, has submitted the matter to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), which is the NHS’ advisory body, for consultation, and the couple hope to hear the outcome next month.

Mr Baldock said they would “struggle to afford” the private treatment, but would be “torn” between taking that option if a date was offered within the next few weeks.
