DETERMINED student Daisy Bell has brought together a remarkable collection of postcards that are expected to raise more than £10,000 at auction for charity.

The fascinating array of postcards, designed by almost 200 famous artists, writers, musicians, actors and celebrities, are the result of months of hard work.

Daisy, of Whitwell-on-the-Hill, sprung into action after her uncle, Robin Needham, was killed in the tsunami on Boxing Day last year.

She has since pledged to raise funds for his charity, CARE International.

Mr Needham, formerly of Helmsley, was a senior worker for the aid and development agency and had devoted his life to helping others in some of the most challenging areas of Africa and Asia.

The 20-year-old University of Edinburgh psychology student sent a letter, plain postcard and her uncle's obituary to hundreds of famous people.

Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Mario Testino, Sir Paul McCartney, Sol Campbell, Frankie Dettori, Charlotte Church and Malcolm Gluck are just some of the luminaries who decorated postcards.

Daisy and her university friends Mary Ramsden and Marianna Chidley have now organised an art exhibition, Art of Care, and sale of 60 of the postcards in Edinburgh on September 30.

The remaining postcards will be sold by e-mail auction.

They hope to raise up to £10,000.

"Robin worked for CARE International for 25 years, helping a great number of Third World countries and was director of CARE-Nepal when he was killed," she said.

"It is ironic that he was taken from us in the world's biggest natural disaster when he would have been in his element helping."

Robin was on holiday on Koh Phra Thong, a small coastal archipelago off southern Thailand, with his wife Lucy and their four children when the giant wave struck. He was last seen shepherding people to higher ground.

Mr Needham left behind his mum Jan, who runs Look gallery in Helmsley, his brother Tom, a writer in Kirkbymoorside, and his sister, Janie Bell, who has three daughters, Daisy, Letty and Zillah, and lives in Whitwell-on-the-Hill.

All proceeds will go towards the fund set up in the name of Robin Needham with CARE International UK to help specific villages destroyed by the tsunami.
