PERFECT weather kept people and animals cool and contented for a successful 140th Ryedale Show at Welburn Park yesterday.

With more than 15,000 visitors and a high number of entries across the board, honorary secretary Peter Woodall was delighted with the day, which he said was the best since foot and mouth.

"It's got bigger year on year since foot and mouth and this year is the best yet," he said.

Although numbers were higher still before the disease struck, Mr Woodall added: "We will get back there - we're on the right track."

Gentle cloud cover was ideal as horses, ponies and riders impressed spectators in nine different arenas throughout the day, taking part in show-jumping, heavy horses and turn-outs, classes for mountain and moorland ponies and private driving.

An array of stalls offered everything from ice cream and donuts to taster sessions with the Kirkbymoorside Natural Health Centre, and Goody's hair salons entertained the fashion conscious with shows and demonstrations.

There was something for everyone, with a wealth of Yorkshire produce was offer from jams and chutneys to a specially blended Yorkshire tonic and all the fun of the fair with children's games and rides.

AN estimated 15,000 visitors flocked to the 140th Ryedale Show yesterday to celebrate agriculture in all its shapes and sizes.

The event was held in the grassy natural amphitheatre of Welburn Park, Kirkbymoorside, and organised by the Ryedale and Pickering Lyth Agricultural Society.

Peter Woodall, who has been show secretary for 35 years, said: "The livestock entries are the best since foot and mouth.

''They're still not as good as in the show's heyday, but they're slowly coming back.

''It's been a perfect day - the stock don't like it when it's too hot and the exhibitors have to water them all the time, so it's good when there's a little bit of cloud like this."

As well as excellent livestock numbers, the equestrian side of the show was thriving, with events taking place in nine different arenas throughout the day.

These included showjumping, heavy horses and turn-outs, classes for mountain and moorland ponies and private driving.

Seventeen-year-old student Emily Glass, from Hovingham, near Malton, who was enjoying ice cream with a group of friends, said: "I think it's really important.

''It shows everything that Ryedale's got to offer and what's important to the people of Ryedale, which is obviously agricultural stuff. People take so much pride in it."

A wealth of fantastic Yorkshire fare was on offer to show-goers. White lavender ewes milk cheese, real pork scratchings, game pies, hog roast baguettes and cheddar and marmite croissants were some of the delicacies on offer.

Visitors browsed a huge number of trade stands selling everything from wooden climbing frames and sand pits made by Duncombe Sawmill, Helmsley, to garden plants and pottery made by Eric and Daphne Hope from Thornton-le-Clay.

Ryedale MP John Greenway said: "I always enjoy coming to this show. It's good seeing all the livestock. Looking at the horses you can see just how central they are to the rural life here. People are having a nice day out; they just want to enjoy themselves. I think this has to be one of the best run small local shows in the north of England."

Mr Greenway had travelled from London that morning to be at the show and said the relaxed atmosphere was a welcome relief from the capital's tense atmosphere in the wake of the terrorist bombings.

Marquees were packed with country crafts, local produce, children's handiwork and horticultural exhibits at the bumper show.
