WOOD craftsmen and manufacturers of the latest state-of-the-art equipment for the timber industry attracted large crowds at the Yorkshire Woodfair held at Thirsk Racecourse on Saturday.

Show organiser Martin Glynn said: "It was a great success and gave people an opportunity to attend such a show in a year when there have been none in North Yorkshire due to the foot and mouth outbreak."

Experts from the Forestry Commission and private businesses gave advice on planting and managing woodland and how to seek grants for such schemes, while leading furniture craftsman Dave Brearley of Linton Country Crafts demonstrated one of his skills - making 'flowers' from tree branches (pictured at right)!

Demonstrations of horses hauling timber, creating indigenous woodland, and conservation schemes were given along with machinery demonstrations by a large number of manufacturers.

Among the exhibitors were Rob Thompson and Terry Taylor of the Snainton Woodturning Centre who give lessons to people seeking a new hobby, at the centre's headquarters in Barker Lane, Snainton.
