SCARBOROUGH'S Shrove Tuesday celebrations which date back several centuries, attracted thousands of people taking part in the seafront skipping festival and the now annual pancake races through the town centre. But town centre manager Margaret Inglesant gave this year's races a novel new look - using woks instead of frying pans, because the day coincided with the Chinese New Year. Some 23 teams took part in the Pancake Olympics after being started by the Mayor, Coun Lucy Haycock who had earlier rung the ancient pancake bell to signal the time when the pancakes were traditionally cooked.
