THE newest addition to a North Yorkshire tourist attraction will definitely not be a bridge too far.
Visitors to Nunnington Hall, near Helmsley, will be the first to use a purpose-built bridge crossing the River Rye from the car park to the historic National Trust property after it was craned into position during a delicate operation yesterday.
The structure – the design of which is intended to reduce flooding risks and provide improved wheelchair access – replaces a smaller wooden footbridge which has spanned the river since the early 1980s after it began to show signs of wear and tear.
Two York companies – designers Alan Wood & Partners and construction firm Simpsons (York) Ltd – have been in charge of the work on the bridge. The hall reopens to visitors on February 27.
