THE pilot of a 40-year-old Chipmunk aircraft had a lucky escape when he made a forced landing in a field in Harome last Friday.

Officials from the Government’s Air Accident Investigation Board are looking into the cause of the accident which happened in a field off Church Lane, close to the former Wombleton airfield.

Eden Blyth, who has a hangar on the airfield where aircraft are stored for their owners, said the ex-military aircraft had originally been used by the RAF for training, said: “We don’t know what happened to cause the accident but the pilot, who has not been named, was on his own and was able to walk away from the aircraft though it did suffer some damage.”

Leeds Air Traffic Control had been alerted about the incident, added Mr Blyth.
