IT’S fair to say that the 2022-23 season has been nothing but eventful for Wombleton Wanderers.

Embarking upon their first season in the newitts.com Beckett Football League, the Ryedale outfit have risen from the ashes to take home silverware.

Wombleton had established themselves in the York Minster Engineering League, but after folding, found help in the late Keith Sales, who smoothed their transition to the compulsory Beckett League division two.

They got off to a flying start, taking the spoils against Rosedale in the Sean Dixon Memorial Trophy pre-season tournament.

Success against Snainton in the Scarborough Junior Cup Final was closely followed by victory in the Gordon Harrison Memorial Cup Final - with the club more than holding their own against division one opposition to take the game to penalties.

The toughest was perhaps to come two weeks later with the final of the National Panasonic Cup against bitter rivals, Scarborough-based The Valley.

Not only had the pair seen off their opponents to reach the final, they were neck and neck in the race for the divisional title.

In fact, both teams had only lost once across the league season - remarkably against each other!

However, Wombleton proved to be the stronger team on the night, with goals in either half from Chris Brown and Ryan Rivis enough for them to seal a 2-0 victory.

Throughout the season, they had played catch up with the Valley, at one point being 52 goals, 15 points and five matches behind, but a congested fixture list proved no problem for Wombleton.

Entering the final weeks of the season, they were forced to play four games a week - including on two consecutive evenings - but took everything in their stride.

Such was their form, they overtook The Valley, with both sides winning 19 of their 20 fixtures, and only separated on goal difference.
