A FOOTBALL club in Malton has made history with its first girls’ team.

Old Malton St Mary's Junior Football Club has set up an under 13 girls’ team for the first time since the club was formed in 1906.

The side already has a ladies team, but were previously lacking a junior squad.

Despite a loss for the club’s first game of the season on September 17 against York RI, coach of Old Malton U13 girls’, Nick Drew, said the team were ‘buoyant with their excellent performance.’

Nick took over as manager of the team for the season, after moving from Brooklyn Football Club in Norton.

He said that the introduction of a junior girls’ side has been met with positivity.

“There has been a lot of people wanting to see one,” Nick said.

He added that the players have been well supported by parents and the community.

Of the team, Nick said: “All the girls are so keen and motivated and committed.

“We’ve got girls of all abilities.

“We’re just trying to keep people active, look after their wellbeing and encouraging them to play football.”

The team currently has 16 members, who train every Wednesday.

Training has recently moved to the 3G pitch at Malton Community Sports Centre, as the facility has flood lights to combat the dark nights.

Nick said that each week all 16 attend, no matter the weather.

“They’re a great bunch of girls,” he added.

Despite some time away, Nick is no stranger to the club.

He played for Old Malton for 10 years and was also the captain during his time there.

Over the years Nick lifted numerous trophies with his team, including after the York and District Premier League in 2001.

“There is a good, warm feeling at the club,” he said.

Nick went on to explain how the success of the Lionesses during the 2022 Euros has added to the support for the Old Malton club.

England beat Germany 2-1 after extra time in front of 87,000 supporters at Wembley Stadium securing the first major tournament title for the country since 1966.

On the Lionesses’ Euro glory, Nick said: “I think the interest (in women’s football) was always there, but it has galvanised it further.”

“Women’s football has become more and more popular.

“For the girls it’s given them an insight into what could be achieved.”

Any year 7 or 8 girls who wish to play football and join the team can do so by getting in touch on 07795508232.

Training takes place on Wednesdays at 6.30pm at Malton Sports Centre.
