FOOTBALL coaches scored a big hit with Ryedale youngsters during a half-term soccer school.

Skills were honed and players took part in a mini world cup as part of the week organised by Nigel Carson Soccer School.

"It's a great thing for the children to do in the holidays. There are a lot of children who have nothing to do, who sit around playing PlayStation for a week, and we have parents who work and need their children entertained, " said Nigel. "This is a way that they can come out and get fresh air, they can get exercise, they can learn new skills, they can make new friends and it's a real good thing for them."

Nigel has been running his soccer schools in the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale area for 13 years. The organisation benefits from sponsorship by the sportswear and equipment supplier Umbro and this year it also made a deal with the Subway sandwich company, which has delivered healthy lunches to the youngsters taking part.

Head coach at the Malton soccer school, Danny Gildea, who also plays for Pickering Town, said: "We've been teaching the children skills and trying to improve their football and at the same time having a lot of fun."

He added: "It's been really good, one of the best courses I've done. Not just the footballing ability but also the kids' attitudes, it's been an excellent week."
