VILLAGERS in Thornton-le-Dale have ridden 507 miles without moving an inch.

The annual Thornton-le-Dale Spinride, held on Saturday, May 5 - the day the Tour de Yorkshire flew through town - raised £5,000.

The Spinride saw about 60 riders on static bikes pedal for 30 minutes each, between 8am to 8pm, covering some 507 miles.

The festival of pedalling included a tombola, "best decorated bicycle" competition, music on the green, cake stall, hog roast, face painting and an auction.

Of the total raised, £4,000 has been donated to Martin Hospice for Children and Young People and the remainder to local charities.

Becky Nicholson, community fundraiser, received the money on behalf of Martin House Hospice.

On behalf of the organisers, Roger Sharples said: “Thank you to everybody who took part helping to run the stalls, to the riders and their sponsors. Thanks also to local businesses for their support, with a special mention to Peter Nelson Fitness Centre for the loan of the bikes and to Dalby Bike Barn with helping organise the event.

“It was a great community effort, involving all ages and above everything else was a fun day.”
