KIRKBYMOORSIDE History Group has launched a new book.
Mustard and Lupins and is about a local lady Kate Dowson, nee Fletcher, who was born in Rosedale before moving to Cropton.
She worked in the forests around Cropton during the Second World War, one of many local girls who weren’t part of the Timber Corps so not classed as Lumber Jills and who didn’t get the recognition they got.
Kate worked for the Forestry and had to do the same job as the men, planting trees, clearing out the woodland and fencing, working alongside PoWs from nearby Eden Camp, Malton.
The book also includes a story about the bomber which crashed in Spaunton in October 1943. It also has the sad tale of the Halls of Pig Lug Farm, demolished in 1920 and now enveloped by the forests, and a section on the Forestry Commission Nursery as it is today.
