RYEDALE Folk Museum is seeking a volunteer to get its historic clocks on display working again.

A Victorian chiming presentation clock will be one of the pieces that the museum is hoping to restore to working order.

Helen Mason, collections team leader said: “We have some beautiful old clocks in our collection. It would be fantastic to see and hear them working again.

“The chiming presentation clock has been on display in the museum’s Victorian cottage for more than 40 years.

"It was donated by Mr Rimer who was the school master in Rosedale and given to him by the school as a leaving gift in 1897.”

Other clocks in the museum’s collection include a pendulum clock, a grandfather clock, a chapel wall clock and a General Post Office electric wall clock. Almost all the museum’s clocks are in need of ongoing maintenance or restoration.

The museum is holding a volunteer recruitment day on Wednesday, from 10am to 4pm.

Craig Irving, operations manager said: “Ryedale Folk Museum is a get place to get involved if you have a few hours to spare. There’s always something happening and it’s a great way to meet people.

“We need new volunteers each year to help us provide a service to our visitors and to help us care for our buildings and collections. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who might like to help with visiting school groups, which is a very rewarding area of work.”

For those interested in volunteering that cannot attend the open day, you can phone or email Craig Irving, operations manager, on 01751 417367 or info@ryedalefolkmuseum.co.uk
