STAFF at Malton Hospital’s diagnostic centre have been recognised with a clutch of awards as their one-stop urology clinic nears its first anniversary.

The multi-disciplinary team has garnered awards within the York Trust, as well as nationally.

They were crowned Urology Team of the Year by the prestigious British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) at its annual conference in Glasgow at the end of last year, which sees them get £1,500 towards the staff training budget, as well as a team building away day provided by sponsors Coloplast.

At the York Trust’s Celebration of Achievement awards in Bridlington, the team were runners-up in two categories - enhancing systems and services, and efficiency.

Team leader Sister Teryll Garner was also given a star award in recognition of “going above and beyond on a daily basis”.

An NHS spokesman said: “Since the opening of the department Teryll has facilitated a smooth transition of services and received regular positive feedback from the patients that have come through the unit.

“From patients and visitors, through to staff at all levels, nothing is ever too much and no query ever too difficult.”

Sister Garner said it had come completely out of the blue that her team had nominated her.

“I was really touched by it,” she said. “I’ve been in nursing for many years and to get this award was amazing, really nice.”

With regard to the team awards, she added: “It’s good to know it’s appreciated. A lot of hard work has gone into getting the clinic up and running, improving things, developing things. It’s always nice to get good feedback.”

The one-stop clinic was officially opened by John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, last year. Three days a week, it provides those who have been referred to it with a host of tests or procedures, including ultrasounds, x-rays, cystoscopies and biopsies.

Sister Garner said that the one-stop clinic isn’t unique but it is a new way of working for an outpatient area for the trust. It aims to streamline the process - what used to be up to four appointments is now all done in one.

As well as urology, it also now provides services in dermatology and plastic surgery, which began just before Christmas. It’s also hoping to obtain a CT scanner.

“It’s expanding all the time,” Sister Garner said.

Of Malton hospital, she added. “It’s a nice environment. They spent a lot of money upgrading it and making sure it was fit for purpose.”
