A CHURCH which was targeted by repeated vandalism and theft has been awarded an initial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

All Saints Church in Slingsby was the subject of repeated burglaries at the end of last year when most of the lead was stripped from the roof, causing major water damage.

It will take about £150,000 to repair and the local community has to raise at least £50,000 to support other sources of funding.

Development funding of £11,100 has now been awarded by the HLF’s ‘Onward and upwards’ project to help the church progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date.

The project aims to replace lead stolen from the roof in 2016 with theft-proof materials and a new CCTV security system. It will also create a new ‘Local History Resource Centre’ and exhibition area in the church, opening up the church to new uses.

An educational programme of lectures and workshops will offer training and opportunities to volunteers of all ages, so they can share their discoveries and help care for the building in the future.

Chrysa Apps, one of the organisers from the PCC, said: “Slingsby Church was the subject of repeated burglaries at the end of 2016 when most of the lead was stripped from the roof, causing major water damage.

“Slingsby Church is recognised by the National Historic Churches Trust as a Grade II listed building worth preserving, and it plays a pivotal role in village life.”

The first church at Slingsby is recorded in the Domesday Book, but the present building was rebuilt between 1867-1869 by the architect Robert James Johnson of Newcastle for Admiral Howard, of Castle Howard

Reverend Martin Allwood, from All Saint’s Church, said: “We’re delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to the generosity of National Lottery players.

“All Saints’ has been at the heart of village life in Slingsby for over 100 years and it is wonderful to know that we have taken the first steps towards preserving it for future generations.”

As part of the fundraising a Christmas concert is being held at the church on Sunday, December 3 at 3pm. The concert will include popular Christmas songs and traditional carols by Terrington village choir. Refreshments will be available and included in the ticket price of £6.

Tickets are available by phoning 01653 628982, email maucarm36@gmail.com or from Slingsby village shop.
