A WOMAN died suddenly at the age of 30 from a condition caused by excessive alcohol consumption, an inquest has heard.

Emma Jane Anderson, of Arbor Way, Norton, died on May 28 at her home address.

The inquest at Scarborough Rugby Club on Wednesday, was told that a post-mortem examination was carried out by Dr Julie Walker of James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

It found that the cause of death was alcoholic ketoacidosis. Dr Walker’s report said that this was a condition caused by excessive alcohol consumption affecting the body’s ability to produce insulin.

“The body is then unable to synthesise glucose to meet its needs,” the report added.

The inquest was told that this then leads to a build-up of so-called ketone bodies in the bloodstream, which increases the amount of acid in the system.

Dr Yang Bong Lee, of the Derwent Practice, in Norton, said in a statement that Ms Anderson had visited the surgery on April 1 after having difficulty sleeping, and was referred to the sleep clinic. He added that they had discussed drinking and Ms Anderson said she shared a bottle of vodka each week.

Ms Anderson’s mother Gertrude Anderson, who she had lived with along with her daughter, said in her evidence that Ms Anderson had also had a problem with her weight.

She said: “She only drank a couple of times a week with me, socialising with neighbours.”

She said that they would share a bottle of vodka in an evening, twice a week, which Ms Anderson would drink with coke.

“She hadn’t had any alcohol problems before,” she added, “and she was starting to lose weight”.

Coroner Michael Oakley said: “She had been drinking before she died and that was something she did about twice a week.

“That has directly led to her death and in these circumstances my conclusion is one of misadventure.”

Following her death, Ms Anderson, a former ride operator at Flamingo Land, was described as “very sociable and a brilliant mum to her daughter Michaela”.

A crowdfunding site was also set up by Lisa Ridsdale from Station Taxis in Norton which raised £1,000 for the family.
