NEARLY 40 local people turned up to discuss the challenges of climate change over coffee and cake with Thirsk and Malton MP Kevin Hollinrake.

The event at Brandsby Village Hall was organised by the Brandsby WI as part of of the Climate Coalition's "week of action".

After some introductory remarks from Aynsley Halligan, the local federation of WIs’ climate ambassador, Mr Hollinrake gave a talk about what the government and others are doing to address climate change.

Topics of discussion included meeting climate change targets, removal of the Green New Deal which incentivised energy efficiency improvements for old housing stock, the publication of the latest 2017 Clean Growth Plan, and government support for renewables in contrast to fossil fuels.

Ms Halligan said: "Despite some obvious conflicting views between some at the meeting and those of the government presented by Mr Hollinrake, the atmosphere was convivial and it was an enjoyable morning."

Kevin Hollinrake said: "We spent a wonderful morning in one of Yorkshire's most gorgeous villages with homemade tea and cake discussing, rather soberingly, the biggest threat to humanity.

"I am very grateful to all the work of the Brandsby WI and for their invitation to address their very well-informed audience."
