A RYEDALE village is due to launch its newly updated 'parish plan'.

Swinton village, near Malton, will launch the new document this Saturday, July 15 at the BSA Sports Centre.

The launch will take place from 2pm until 4pm with craft activities for children and light refreshments available.

This will be followed by a family picnic and 'Cook your Own Barbecue' and rounders matches, with the sports centre bar open from 4pm until 6pm.

The purpose of the 'parish plan' is to ascertain what aspects of village life cause a problem for residents, what aspects they enjoy and suggestions for improvements in village life.

The first version of the plan was written in 2011.

The main concern for villagers was the speed of traffic, both through the village and down West Street and up East Street.

There were also concerns about the poor drainage system at the bottom of West Street which causes flooding during heavy rainstorms and makes the road and footpaths almost impassable.

A village spokesperson said that a success of the plan so far has been that there have been more community events with race nights, fireworks, car boot sales, bingo, treasure hunts and barbecues, and also that there is now a bi-monthly village newsletter for residents and a village website.
