MALTON in Bloom and the 1323 Malton Squadron of the Royal Air Force Cadets join forces to give the town's war memorial a floral makeover.

The volunteers have turned their attention to the war memorial's garden to give it some extra TLC in advance of the judging of Malton in Bloom on July 15.

Elizabeth Parlett-Rhodes, from Malton in Bloom, said: "The site will be a key feature on judging day and Malton in Bloom wanted to build upon the great work of the Malton Town Council groundsmen who have responsibility for the war memorial.

"With the support of some significant elbow grease from the Air Cadets and a very generous donation of box topiary from Michael and Elaine Paley the site has a new look."

Elizabeth said the site was earmarked for a major renovation later in the year so the Malton in Bloom team has taken a sensitive approach to the planting scheme to allow for the relocation of plants in the future.

"In keeping with the style and significance of the memorial the planting features; box topiary, red geraniums, red poppies, verbena lollipops and will be complemented with three wooden red poppies," she added.

"The Air Cadets will be supporting Malton in Bloom throughout the year and have committed to ensuring the war memorial garden looks its best all year round, including Remembrance Sunday.

Elizabeth Parlett-Rhodes, said: "The enthusiasm shown by everyone to transform the war memorial garden has been tremendous and I’d like to say a big thank you to the Royal Air Cadet volunteers, Michael and Elaine Paley, Angela Gair and Sue Sedman for giving up their time to support us.

"Malton in Bloom is over the moon at the community support and effort which has gone into transforming the war memorial and would like to encourage anyone with green fingers to get in touch."
