A CHARITY set up in memory of Liam Miller is holding a fundraising event to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

The Irish Night will be held at Ryedale Community Leisure Centre in Norton, in aid of L.I.A.M. (Laughter, Inspiration, Art, Music), which is offering grants to support underprivileged young people.

L.I.A.M. was established with the support of Liam’s dad, Pete, brother, Jamie and sister, Natalie, after the 20-year-old died following a stabbing attack in York in 2015.

Liam, from Terrington, was a former pupil at Malton School and studied music and art at York College before going to university to study graphic design. A talented guitarist, he played in a local band, Nocebo.

Ian Hughes, a friend of the family, who helped set up the charity, said they had decided to hold the Irish night following the success of the L.I.A.M music festival last summer.

“As soon as any Irish songs came on everyone was up and dancing and someone suggested we should do something with an Irish theme,” he said.

“We have one of the top Irish party bands - The Sons of Kildonan, who are fantastic, as well as the Scarborough-based O’Connor Academy of Irish Dance who will perform traditional dancing.

“There will also be a great raffle and it promises to be a good party night to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.”

L.I.A.M has so far raised more than £40,000 and aims to make grants to underprivileged youngsters going to college to study art and music. Grants can be for, for example, musical instruments, art materials, text books, software, hardware, such as cameras and laptops, and stationery, subject to stated criteria.

The Irish night is being held on Friday at Ryedale Community Leisure Centre in Norton at 8pm.

Tickets are £10 and are available from the Topiary Tree in Malton, or phone 01653 619321.
