AN overwhelming majority would like Pickering's Monday market to remain in the Market Place and not move to the Ropery car park, a survey by Pickering town council has revealed.

The council's consultation exercise, carried out in early February, found that 81 per cent of consultees favoured the Market Place, with 15 per cent preferring the car park and four per cent having no preference.

The consultation was carried out among parishioners, non-parishioners, businesses and traders.

Of the last group, 100 per cent wanted to remain in the market place.

This corresponds to a strong rejection of the move voiced by traders recently.

The report to Pickering town council at their meeting this week outlines the key reasons for people wanting the market to stay in the market place.

They include the strong historic connection, the sense of ambience in town, the loss of car park income if it is relocated there, and the fact that a relocation to the Ropery would mean the loss of parking spaces near the town centre.

Also discussed at the council meeting were preparations for this year's Tour de Yorkshire which will pass through Pickering.

The council decided that £1400 should be allocated to dressing the route in the town, with funds coming from reserves and from a grant of £300 from the district council.
