MALTON Army Cadets have returned to their headquarters following emergency repair work.

The detachment was forced to move out of its base in Langton Road, Norton, for five months, while the repair work was carried out.

However, the 35 cadets, aged 12 to 18, have continued to meet, taking part in a variety of challenging military and non-military subjects including first aid, navigation and drill.

Last month, following several weeks of practice, a team of 12 cadets took part in the Company drill competition, which is between eight units, including Scarborough, Catterick and Northallerton.

Despite their lack of facilities leading up to the competition, Malton were awarded first place; bringing home the trophy which was originally donated by local businessman and former Norton mayor Paul Farndale.

Detachment Commander, 2LT Ben Porter, 23, said the detachment were especially thankful to the Ryedale Community Leisure Centre in Norton, who kindly provided them with temporary accommodation, and allowed training to continue.

“Although it has been challenging, I have enjoyed watching the cadets overcome certain obstacles, and we are extremely grateful to the local community for rallying round to assist us,” he said.

“Their sterling performance at the drill competition is testament to their dedication and hard work; I am very proud of all their achievements.”
