A QUAD bike has been stolen from a Ryedale workshop - just days after another was stolen from a Moors village.

The latest theft happened overnight on January 3.

According to a police appeal, a Yamaha YFM400 Bruin quad bike in red - registration number YX60FCL - was stolen from a workshop in Wilton, on the A170 east of Pickering.

The theft comes four days after a red Honda quad went missing from an address in Castleton in the North York Moors.

If anyone has any information regarding the Wilton theft, they are urged to contact police on 101, quoting crime reference number 12170001756.

Police have since issued a warning to owners of the vehicles to keep them safe.

The warning, aimed at owners of quad bikes but also owners of Land Rover Defenders, comes after a spike in thefts of the vehicles.

Over the Christmas and New Year period, Land Rover Defenders were stolen from Boroughbridge, Coniston Cold and Drebley.

Quad bikes were taken from Castleton and Pickering, and a third from Goathland.

The police statement says: "Owners are being advised to always leave vehicles locked and alarmed, if possible, and consider fitting an after-market approved immobiliser.

"They should be parked in a garage or secure area, or in a well-lit open space.

"Keys should never be left in the ignition, in the same place where the vehicle is kept, or near the front door of your home.

"Be wary of anyone taking an interest in your vehicle, and consider a tracker device and marking system.

"If you have a quad that is not registered for the road please make a note of the VIN number so that we have a unique reference to enable the vehicle to be identified if it is recovered."
