THE Romans are most famous for their roads and ruins, but microbiology students at Malton School have been finding out they were also experts in eye medicine.

Pupils, who have opted for microbiology as part of their weekly personal development sessions, have been set a task by Dr Nick Summerton, a GP in Driffield, to research these ancient remedies.

The science team were put in touch with Dr Summerton through the National STEM Learning Centre, York, which offers schools support and resources for science, technology, engineering and maths subjects.

Science teacher Nicky-Jo Cooper said: “The students are extremely enthusiastic about this piece of research. I think what excites them about it is that I don’t know the answer to what they will find and neither does Dr Summerton.

"It is a project that they will not only research but will also present their findings in a professional way so it is a fantastic experience for them.”
