A NEW initiative is being launched to help tackle rural isolation.

Ryedale Community Transport (RCT) is looking for volunteers and help in publicising the service.

Steve Mellalieu, manager of RCT, said: "Without cars, loneliness and isolation are a growing problem for Ryedale residents in small rural areas.

"Jobs, shopping, a social life, medical appointments are all restricted and ultimately they could have to leave their homes to live in towns with more facilities - but without the friends and communities they know.

"This has sparked off a new local partnership initiative launched by RCT volunteers at the Ryedale Parish Councils Liaison Meeting.

"RCT already provides car and minibus lifts for residents who have problems accessing public transport. It also provides low-cost moped hire for younger people needing to get to jobs, attend further education and see friends.

"The team at RCT is now seeking closer collaboration with local communities to improve that service.

“Parish and town councils can help in four ways. We are asking for help in finding volunteer drivers within their own communities.

"We are also asking them to help us find a local co-ordinator for shared trips and to publicise the service on local notice boards and in their local newsletters."

Steve said by collaborating with RCT, local volunteers can work more effectively for their community.

"Passengers will find it easy to book the trips they need and will benefit from lower costs when their driver lives locally to them," he said.

"Those with disabilities, including wheelchair users, will be carried in the most appropriate vehicles.

"Local volunteer drivers will have the back-up of a 60-strong team of other volunteers, providing greater coverage and more flexibility in their own time commitments. Public liability insurance is covered through RCT and a mileage allowance covers their car expenses."
