ITEMS from the popular Woodhams-Stone Collection will be on view to a wider audience this summer as its social history roadshow tours libraries across Ryedale.

Artefacts and information from the collection will visit five libraries staying in each venue for three months, starting in Malton then Norton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley.

The Woodhams Stone Collection was formed in 2011 to secure the future of two significant local history collections for the communities of Malton and Norton-upon-Derwent.

Sid Woodhams has spent more than 60 years collecting material from local businesses and tradesmen. He has also acquired many household items and other objects that reflect local and national events.

John Stone has collected hundreds of postcards and photographs of the local area. He has also built up a large paper-based archive, including public notices, advertisements and material relating to local businesses. Together these collections are a valuable resource for tracing the history of Norton, Malton and the surrounding area.

Project officer Sarah Maultby said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to exhibit some of the Woodhams Stone Collection across Ryedale.

“The tour celebrates the end of our two-year Heritage Lottery Fund project where we have catalogued more than 8,000 items and recorded oral histories with both collectors, Sid Woodhams and John Stone, whose enthusiasm for collecting has left us with such a rich and significant social history of Malton and Norton.

“The objects on display have been chosen by the collectors and by people who have helped with the project over the last two years.

“In the next two years we hope to build on the success of this project with other exciting initiatives.

“We want to thank the library service for working with us and enabling the touring exhibition to take place.”

The tour dates are Malton Library until July 27, Norton Library, August 3 to September 29, Pickering Library, October 6 to December 15, Kirkbymoorside Library, January 10 to March 8, and Helmsley Library, March 16 to June 8.
