A CELEBRATION of all creatures small is taking place for National Insect Week.

Scampston Hall will be shedding light on the little critters living in the Walled Garden and Parkland with a Big Bug Hunt for all the family on Sunday, June 26, 11am – 4pm.

Activities will run throughout the afternoon including children’s crafts and family bug hunting expeditions.

Experts from Natural England will be bringing moth traps so children can admire these fascinating creatures.

2016 marks the 300th anniversary of Capability Brown, the landscape architect who changed the face of England. As a Capability Brown festival hub-site, Scampston is hosting a number of events throughout the summer which are aimed at families, with the goal of educating and inspiring the next generation about the habitats Brown’s landscapes have created.

The Big Bug Hunt forms part of this series of events.

Gill Garbutt, managing director at the Heritage & Learning Centre in Scampston Conservatory, said: “One of our key goals here at the Heritage & Learning Centre is to encourage people to engage with the biodiversity which exists in abundance here in the gardens and Parkland.

"The Big Bug Hunt is an accessible and fun way for families to learn about the smaller creatures here at Scampston, as well as the ecological value of landscapes like Scampston.”

“We are delighted to be working with Natural England to deliver this event, and experts will be on hand throughout the afternoon to answer questions.”

National Insect Week takes place every two years. For the week, the Royal Entomological Society joins forces with a number of partners to encourage people of all ages to learn more about insects.

Standard admission fees apply. A family ticket for the Walled Garden & Parkland costs £25 and includes two adults and three children. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
