A SERIES of evening walks are taking place at Scampston, aimed at relieving stress and helping people re-engage with the world around them.

On Tuesday evenings throughout May, therapist Madeleine Wuidart will be offering busy people the chance to take a deep breath and appreciate the beauties of the parkland at Scampston.

Therapies such as Mindfulness meditation are now being recognised as significant aids to quietening the mind and bringing about positive changes in the way the body functions.

Madeleine’s experience as a complementary therapist, coupled with her work as an artist deeply inspired by the rhythms and beauties of the natural world, has encouraged her to offer these walks.

She said: “Nature offers so many ways of helping us heal ourselves: we feel the tranquillity of still water; we enjoy the sound of running water; we wonder at the strength, grace and power of tall trees. Lying on the grass in the sun, we drink in the warmth and see the beauty of wildflowers. All this brings our attention to the here and now and helps us stay present, not focussed on events that may not even happen.”

Madeleine has previously used guided visualisations to help people relax and find their own inner resources; in these walks she will be drawing on the beauty and healing space of Scampston’s parkland and gardens.

Emma McKenzie, Heritage & Learning Officer at Scampston, said: “We are looking forward to Madeleine’s walks which will offer all of us a refreshing perspective on the parkland at Scampston. This year is the 300th anniversary of landscape architect Capability Brown, which is an excellent opportunity to re-engage with the landscape here, and take the time to consider all its miniature beauties.”

Walkers will be invited to walk slowly, to immerse themselves in their surroundings and to become aware of how this short break can offer deep and lasting refreshment.

‘Slow walks for Busy People’ will take place on May 10, May 17, May 24, May 31, 6.30pm – 7.30pm. Each session costs £5 per person and booking is advised. Walks will take place whatever the weather so suitable clothing and footwear is advised.
