A TREE has come down in a Pickering children's play park, collapsing onto the park bench.

The tree was blown over during 'Storm Barney'. No-one was in the park at the time.

A spokesman for Pickering Town Council said: "The tree came down overnight on Thursday (November 18). It was discovered by the park warden on the Friday morning. The warden did not open the park area and it will remain closed until the tree is removed.

"The tree was subject to an arboricultural report in October 2014 and not identified as problematic. In fact, none of the trees were deemed to be dangerous."

The tree is expected to be removed by the end of the week.

Storm Barney brought winds of up to 85mph to parts of the UK last week, with thousands of homes left without electricity and trains disrupted.
