AN animal lover is organising a "world walk" in memory of her rescue dog.

Kate Collier, who lives in Pickering, took care of Jak, after he was abandoned, blind in one eye and deaf, at the age of 16. Over the next two years, the pair helped raise thousands of pounds for dog charities before Jak died last Christmas.

Since then Kate has continued her fundraising by setting up Jak’s Legacy, which pays for monthly medication for three dogs, Bella who has hip dysplasia, along with Honey and Bobby who both suffer with heart problems.

Kate’s next fundraiser is the world walk next month.

She said: “One night I was thinking about something to do in Jak's memory for his friends to become involved in.

"I thought of a sponsored walk to raise funds, then came up with the idea of having a world wide walk so all his Facebook friends could join in."

Kate said she chose the date September 20 at 11am, but as there are lots of different time zones said everyone could walk at that time or when it was convenient .

"All this was done on Facebook and my friend from school days, who now lives in Austria, got in touch offering to design Jak a website and run it for us," she said.

"Hilary has done an amazing job and people have been registering their support for animals. I then thought not only should Jak's Legacy benefit, but why not throw it open to animal charities all over the world."

Kate said the more people and charities they got involved the more money would be raised for animals.

"It is so easy, all people have to do is go to the website and register for either a walk or donation and put which charity they are helping," she said.

"All we were asking is a very small donation to Jak's Legacy, but as we have a lot of money already pledged and donated if the charity is small we suggest they keep the money for their funds."

Kate said anyone was able to take part in the walk.

"We have people who will use wheelchairs or just walk round the house if they are able," she said.

"My former boss Bill Jackson is walking round The Abbey residential home in Old Malton with his walking frame and already has sponsors. He has Parkinsons and it affects his walking so the walk is good for him as he practices every day."
