THE fifth annual Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge, which has raised almost £60,000 for charity, takes place this weekend with a record number of entries.

This year 190 riders will cycle 144 miles in two days around the scenic Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route, leaving Norton College on Saturday morning to tackle the circular route in aid of Ryedale Special Families.

Heading out towards Pocklington, via Thixendale and Millington, the route then goes through Market Weighton and Beverley, before the overnight stop at Hutton Cranswick, for a barbecue and live music.

Sunday morning sees the cyclists set off through Driffield towards Bridlington, before heading west via Hunmanby, Foxholes and Sledmere, back to the finish in Norton.

The event has become a major fundraiser for the Malton-based charity, having raised almost £60,000 since it started, thanks to the efforts of cyclists of all ages and experiences, and is used to help Ryedale Special Families continue its work in providing care and support to more than 400 families who have children with disabilities, illness or special needs, throughout the area.

Event organiser Rob Davies said: “Cyclists pay an initial £40 entry fee then commit to raising at least an additional £60 in sponsorship, which is fantastic, particularly as a lot raise much more than that.

"We do everything we can to make the weekend a memorable one and hope to continue growing in a controlled way each year. However, nothing would be possible without the help of everyone involved behind the scenes, from marshals, first aiders, mechanical support and 'guardian angel' riders.

"In particular we’re extremely grateful to the generous support of our sponsors, who include Bannisters’ Farm, a farming family business based at Carnaby, whose traditionally baked potatoes will help re-energise the riders at the halfway, Big Bear Bikes of Pickering who provide mechanical support for the entire event, Escada Systems of Malton, Inntravel from Castle Howard and Wold Top Brewery.”
