MALTON is gearing up for the town’s second Festival of Cycling this weekend following the success of last summer’s inaugural event.

About 6,000 people and 300 competitors attended the 2014 festival and organisers are aiming for Sunday’s event to be bigger and better.

Ash Clark, from Northern Ride in Malton, who instigated the festival with fellow cycling fan Keith Davies, said entries are coming in from all over the country.

“There is a high amount of entrants for most of the races in comparison to other similar events in the area,” he said.

“We are very pleased we have secured sponsorship this year and can build on the success of last year.”

Ash said they were keen to get the community involved with live outdoor music during and after the event provided by the Royal Oak, along with a barbecue and refreshments from Malton Relish, the Patisserie, Brass Castle Brewery and SloeMotion.

“This year we really want to get children involved in the fun riding and races in the morning and get as many youngsters as possible out and cycling,” he said.

“The children’s fun racing is from 10am to noon and it is for ordinary bikes with an emphasis on fun.”

Ray Chapman Motors will also be providing a display and and Crombie Wilkinson will be promoting their bike giveaway of a Focus Culebro 4.0 worth £699. The day starts at 10am with the children’s events, continuing in the afternoon with adult racing until 6.30pm.

Ash said: “We are pleased that the 2015 festival of cycling has being supported by so many local businesses.

“The inaugural event in 2014 was launched off the back of the Grand Depart and this year the Tour de Yorkshire has helped strengthen the growth of cycling across the region.

“2015 will see yet more races at the festival of cycling in addition to live outdoor music and food stalls keeping things local and supporting our community.”
